Description:

Australia's reputation overseas has taken a battering over the last decade: rushing into the Iraq War without UN backing, refusing to sign up to the Kyoto Protocol to tackle climate change, the mandatory detention of refugees. Robert McClelland, Labor's Foreign Affairs spokesman, wants to engage Australia better internationally to ensure human rights are upheld and national security is strengthened.

Robert McClelland is correct (unfortunately). How I wish he was wrong! But having travelled overseas last year, I was absolutely embarrassed and angered at the frostiness of some Europeans towards me. "Australians invaded Iraq!" they said. "What did Iraqi people ever do to Australians?" Yes indeed. What did those poor, wretched Iraqis ever do to us Australians to deserve their country being destroyed?

This is one of the main reasons I will be voting labor, I just can't swallow my country being such a US pawn in foreign affairs and used in such a fashion, I want to see a government that will give us back a truly independent and sovereign foreign policy and not just blindly following the US.

He's right on the mark. Australia is tarnished in the global arena. Howard plays to domestic politics and has sullied our international reputation as a result. Go the ALP
