Description:

On 7/7/07 in her 77th year, (she's 76) folk blues legend Odetta performed a free hour and a half set at Governors Island, NYC, kicking off the Folks on the Island four concert series. The house in New Orleans is probably a high rise luxury condo now with more expensive whores and designer blue jeans but Odetta brings us back to before the flood. Before Janis Joplin sang Down on Me, there was Odetta's recording on her 1959 LP Mine Eyes Have Seen. Joplin acknowleded her as the source. There was Odetta soulfully growling Poor Little Jesus and singing Masters of War with force and conviction even beyond Dylan's. The other song in the medley is the Unfortunate Rake, another folk classic I first heard on the LP Folksy Nina (Simone) . Every 60's folk singer owes a debt to Odetta. Thanks for concert. It was great seeing you. This concert will be broadcast in 3 parts on the Internet Stream of Manhattan Neighborhood Network, Tuli Kupferberg's Revolting News, Channel 56, Monday 10 PM, Daily Savings Time July 30, August 13, Augest 27.

We owe so much to Odetta - Bob Dylan said, "I heard a record of hers [Odetta Sings Ballads and Blues] in a record store, back when you could listen to records right there in the store. Right then and there, I went out and traded my electric guitar and amplifier for an acoustical guitar, a flat-top Gibson. ... * Joan Baez said "Odetta was a goddess. Her passion moved me. I learned everything she sang."[6]

:o i thought she was dead - so u can understand my utter glee to hear this - she had me in tears listening to this - its so tragic :'( - this music - it reminds of Hurt by Cash, his desperate cry to be young again - i might have red this al wrong - but i come from a small town in the south west of england and im only 17 - so i mite not be reading the context correctly - SHE LIVES!!
