Attorney General Michael Mukasey Pat Leahy Turkey Iraq attack Thompson Hillary Clinton Giuliani Obama Cheney
Description: Hello! I'm Kristin Volk on this Wednesday, October 17, 2007 with a UPI headline update. President Bush's nominee for attorney general is expected to face tough questioning as his confirmation hearings begin today. Michael Mukasey will reportedly be asked about hot-button issues like no-warrant surveillance and his views on the use of torture. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Senator Patrick Leahy says he expects Mukasey to be confirmed. That's after Leahy met with the nominee yesterday. Turkey's parliament is predicted to approve military action against Kurdish separatists in Iraq today. That's despite international calls to avert the crisis. Turkey is accusing the group of launching attacks from Iraq's Kurdish provinces. Those attacks have reportedly claimed the lives of 30 Turkish groups and civilians recently. Iraq called on the country today to grant them more time to crackdown on Kurdish separatists. Turkey says any action won't immediately follow the motion, but it has already accumulated 60 thousand troops in the region. A new poll out shows that Republican Presidential candidate Fred Thompson is losing ground. Thompson dropped eight points from September. He's now at 19 percent, slightly ahead of Senator John McCain. Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani still leads at 27 percent. On the Democratic side, Senator Hillary Clinton continues to rise. She now leads her rival, Senator Barack Obama by 30 points, up from 23 points last month. The wife of Vice-President Dick Cheney claims that her husband and Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama are actually related. In an interview yesterday, Lynne Cheney says she made the discovery while researching her husband's genealogy for her new book. She says the two public figures share an ancestor eight generations ago. Last year, it was reported that Obama is also an eleventh cousin of the president himself. That's all for now.
