Description:
This is a four day old budgie (parakeet). My female laid six eggs, this was the first to hatch. |

Michelle5451 ::: Favorites I'd keep it until at least Monday, just to be sure. I always needed to know with 100% certainty I wasn't throwing out a live baby, and although logic told me an egg a week overdue to hatch wasn't a good egg, I always cracked them open to set my mind at rest. Sometimes I'd find liquid goop (bad egg) or a chick that didn't make it. Thinking about such a sight sounds disturbing and I cringed the first time, but it's really not that bad, it looks asleep. 07-08-09 22:37:22 _____________________________________________________
Michelle5451 ::: Favorites Those red eyes are so cool! What color are the parents? If you have two red eyed chick, my guess is going with Lutino, since two Albinos from the same clutch seems odd. Either of the parents Albino or Lutino? 07-08-09 22:39:08 _____________________________________________________
artmart88 ::: Favorites Nope. Neither parents are albino or lutino. If you like I can give you a link to my photobucket page with pics of the parents and the chicks. Just out of curiosity - why would it be strange to have 2 ablinos from the same clutch? 07-08-09 23:30:07 _____________________________________________________
Michelle5451 ::: Favorites Because an albino bird, animal, human is the result of being born with melanin (where pigmentation comes from) so I guess I'm thinking it would be had to have that happen in more than one in a hen's lifetime of having chicks, let alone two from the same clutch. Maybe it's more common in birds than other species? 07-08-10 00:01:16 _____________________________________________________
Michelle5451 ::: Favorites And yes, please send your photobucket link to my email address - I'd love to see your birds! 07-08-10 00:02:05 _____________________________________________________
artmart88 ::: Favorites I love the budgies at this age as well. The oldest one has just started to grow in his "fluff". The little white feathers on the tips of his wings have a yellow hue, so I think you're right about it being a lutino. 07-08-10 19:46:07 _____________________________________________________
artmart88 ::: Favorites About cleaning the nestbox...I was thinking about just removing the chicks and wiping it with a damp cloth as opposed to emptying it out. The youngest one is still really small and fragile, so I think I'll wait until it's a bit larger before I take them all out to clean it. But you're right...it is getting pretty messy in there. 07-08-10 19:48:25 _____________________________________________________
scorpioTNT ::: Favorites it frightends me how fragile those cutties are 07-08-11 17:56:07 _____________________________________________________
Michelle5451 ::: Favorites Glad all is going well! It's best to dump that stuff out, it's mostly feces and for health reasons, until their immune systems get stronger, it's best to dump it out. They won't miss it, I promise! :-) 07-08-11 23:45:14 _____________________________________________________
