This documentary nails it. I'm a vet of more than 15 yrs at LAX, so I know what I'm talking about. Sadly, the mgmt types who run the ATC system think they can attract new people for 31k/yr. Less than what you make at Costco running a register. Now they're mystified that they're critically staffed US wide. LAX had 47 controllers 2 1/2 yrs ago. We're down to 33. Waddaya think abou that?

I was a Cardio-Vascular Perfusionist (Heart-Lung machine) for 18 years. I did over 2,500 heart surgeries to include several heart transplants..I worked for the world renown Dr. John Kirklin. He said that Perfusionist were like Air Traffic Controllers as far as stress, except we could only cause one death at a time due to neglect.

Seems pretty high-tech. They take a piece of plastic with a couple words on it and throw it down a tube.

Yeah, as long as they replace the pilots with robots, too. As long as you have humans flying the aircraft, you are going to need humans controlling the sequences. You can have two identical aircraft, flying for the same airline, having totally different reactions to situations such as weather and turbulence. Front guy will go slow and back guy go fast, and if you don't pay attention, you have a "deal".
